The Curzon Hotel
...a brief history
This building was built in approximately 1867. I say approximately because records are scarce and the only evidence we have was in a dated piece of ‘The Times’ newspaper which was found used as wadding in one of the many original sash windows which can be found throughout the hotel. All in working order after re-balancing in 2001.This evidence has been framed and put on display in Room 8, where it was found. The original ‘mechanical workings’ from the bell pull system is also exposed on a wall where it was discovered in 2002 when it was re-plastered before decorating. Unfortunately this old system is not in working order although you can contact Reception with that new fangled device known as the telephone!

This building was built as a gentleman’s residence probably for a wealthy merchant profiting from our industrial neighbour, Liverpool. It was built as two houses hence our address 52-54 Hough Green. All those years ago our forefathers could never have imagined this building becoming a ‘hostelry’!
Nor would they have imagined it being a nursing home for new born babies in the 1950’s!!
With diminishing family size and expensive upkeep (there is a fireplace in every bedroom!) it was inevitable that a building of this size would eventually have to be put to commercial use.
It was in 1980 that Queen’s Moat House converted it into the hotel it is today joining both properties together as one and creating sixteen en-suite bedrooms keeping up with the new trend of that time. No two rooms are the same in size or appearance.
For the last eleven years the Mitchell family have been working at keeping up & improving standards with all sixteen bathrooms now re-fitted with attractive tiles and some with corner baths where size allows. We don’t claim to be at the cutting edge of hotel technology but we do hope to offer good old fashioned hospitality. Fine food and an interesting wine list are there to enjoy in a comfortable lounge bar & restaurant. You’ll find no fashionable parquet floors or brown leather suites; they just would not fit in: our furnishings are traditional to suit the building.
Our main aim is for our Guests to enjoy a sound night’s sleep in comfortable, warm, relaxed surroundings with a personal welcome so that they will wish to return again and again to our lovely hotel.
